The Buddhankur Vihara and Meditation Centre was established in 2008 by Dr. Upananda Mahathero.
In 2008, Professor Dr. Upananda Mahathero personally purchased land in a very remote and dangerous hill area. He used his own funds to start the center, building a simple structure protected only by bamboo fencing. He also began hosting the traditional "Vassa" rainy season retreats for the local monks.
The journey was not easy, as the center faced many "ups and downs" in the wild wilderness. Thieves frequently targeted the site, even stealing sacred Buddha statues. Despite these scary incidents and the hazardous environment, Dr. Mahathero's deep determination never wavered, and he continued to protect the peaceful meditation space.
Inspired by his dedication, many generous men and women began to offer their support. This collective spirit of charity and deep respect for the founder led to significant donations. Today, thanks to the kindness of the donors and their cooperation, the center has successfully grown to include two permanent buildings for the entire community.
Since 2008, Professor Dr. Upananda Mahathero has dedicated his life to establishing the Buddhankur Vihara. At the Buddhankur Vihara, Dr. Upananda organized these retreats to allow monks to practice their faith even when the area was still a desolate and hazardous hill of Chattogram, inspired by the legacy of Nalanda.
